This shot was unexpected. I was with a group of other photographers on this particular morning, making the most of my last sunrise in the Assateague area.

Pelicans have always fascinated me, and I’ll always stop to watch them with their prehistoric big bills and impressive wingspans. So, when I asked this group of horse photographers if they’d mind stopping for a moment, they kindly obliged, although I suspect they thought I was slightly mad.

I’d only really seen individual pelicans; maybe a cluster of two or three. But, until this encounter, I had no idea that they could display such beautiful synchronicity as a group.

I have a few horse images from this trip that I like, but this one of the pelicans has become a real favourite.
